LIGHT DRAWINGS
Twenty five years ago I started my exploration of drawing with light. I became fascinated by the unpredictable nature of night photography. Drawing with light and night photography enable me to create truths not visible to the naked eye.
Over the last 25 years I turned my focus to Green River Cemetery in The Springs of East Hampton, N.Y. an area of eastern Long Island that attracted a colony of artists dating back to the 1940’s. Green River Cemetery is the final resting place of over 40 artists including Jackson Pollock, Lee Krasner, Elaine DeKooning, Harold Rosenberg, Jimmy Ernst, Constantino Nivola among others.
Viewing the results of my first images from this body of work I found that, more than just utilizing a technique, I captured the spirit of those who had passed through this unique place and left behind parts of their soul. This project captures the spirit and energy of the artistic souls who passed through this place and will remain with us, forever transforming the essence and landscape of the East End.
Creating these images on film without computer manipulation is the innovative direction to which I take contemporary photography. By moving photography closer to painting, I enable photography to transcend its documentary function to make imaginative and subjective statements.
